Fr. Donald Goergen is a Dominican priest, teacher, lecturer, and author. He has taught, lectured, and given retreats in Asia, Africa, and throughout North America. He was previously Provincial for the Dominican Friars of the Central Province as well as President of the Dominican Leadership Conference. He co-founded the Dominican Ashram, a contemplative Dominican community and ministry of prayer, in which he lived for nine years. He previously taught and currently teaches at the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, MO, where he is also prior of the formation community. Fr. Donalds doctorate is in systematic theology, his dissertation on Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, and his current interests include contemplative traditions, East and West, the evolution of consciousness, and the thought of Thomas Aquinas as a spiritual master. He has published many articles and ten books in the areas of Christology and Christian Spirituality, including Fire of Love, Encountering the Holy Spirit (2006). Among other honors awarded him, he is the recipient of the 2010 Yves Congar Award from Barry University in Miami.

The Rev. Richard Tessmer Leadership Lecture, sponsored by Alexian Brothers Health System in Arlington Heights, IL, honors the memory of Dick Tessmer, longtime chaplain, supervisor, and pillar of the NACC.

Like other Catholic healthcare providers, Mercy Health is fundamentally committed to addressing the spiritual needs of patients. Traditionally, pastoral care has been provided only in the hospital, yet spiritual needs exist in other settings. Mercy determined 95 percent of patient encounters are in physician offices and has explored ways to incorporate attention to spiritual needs in these settings. This workshop will provide an overview of Mercys innovative approach for providing pastoral care to the clinics, including telemedicine and other technology; an outline of steps in implementing the strategy; and measurements and indicators of success. Panelists will present perspectives of physicians, system leaders, mission leaders, pastoral services leaders, chaplains, and patients.

This is a critical issue for chaplains and directors of pastoral care departments. This workshop describes the use of a predictive modeling statistical procedure (multivariate logistic regression), to identify characteristics of patients who are most likely to want a chaplains ministry. In a multiple site patient expectation survey, the strongest predictor of wanting to see a chaplain was a reported affiliation with Catholic or Protestant denominations. Catholic patients were almost eight times as likely to want to see a chaplain. And what about Protestant patients?
