- For the last several years,
Washington has operated from
crisis to crisiswhether its the
expiration of Americas authority
to borrow money, across-the-board
cuts in critical programs, or the
threat of a government shutdown.
Throughout each of these battles,
only a handful of leaders have been
willing to stand up for the voiceless
members of our society. One such
legislator is Senator Richard Durbin
of Illinois, the Assistant Majority
Leader in the Senate. A champion
for disadvantaged students, Senator
Durbin is leading the charge on
issues affecting students and poor
peoplefrom halting increases in
student loan interest rates, to carving
out a pathway to citizenship for
undocumented students through
the DREAM Act, to limiting the cuts
imposed through sequestration. As
a leader in the Senate, in his party,
and on the Senate Appropriations
Education Subcommittee, Senator
Durbin shares his projections
regarding timing and impact of
Congressional action affecting TRIO
and other education programs, and
how we can most effectively advocate
for our students during this time.

- Being a high school or college
student is not easyyoure stuck in
the middle, no longer a child, but not
quite an adult. Students questioning
their sexual orientation have an
additional hurdle to overcome. As
educators, we have to deal with a
number of questions to be able to
support and assist these students.
To whom can young people go to
discuss these issues confidentially?
How can schools and programs
assure there is a supportive, open
environment for them to come
out? How can a school help a
gay adolescent whose family is
disparaging him/her? How can you
spot signs of LGBTQ bullying and
what can be done to prevent it? This
session answers these questions and
more in an effort to assist in creating
an environment of acceptance for all.

- Symbiotic relationships are those
that provide mutual benefit to
each party in the relationship. As
more and more local funders and
national and state organizations
seek partnerships and collaborations
where visible impact can be seen
in local communities, Talent Search
programs are well positioned to
establish such relationships. However,
doing so definitely requires stepping
outside the box. In this workshop,
the IDEO method of brainstorming
enables participants to develop a
list of possible partnerships and
collaborations by collectively
strategizing. Participants leave with
a working document that can be
put into action when they return. Be
prepared to explore unconventional
and creative community alliances that
may lead to long-lasting exchanges
of resources, money, and knowledge.

- Latino males are the least likely
to attend, persist, and attain a
baccalaureate degree compared
to other male groups in higher
education. Moreover, studies show
that they tend to have the lowest
degree aspirations of any major
race or ethnic group. To figure
out how to close these gaps is to
understand what influences Latino
male aspirations. This workshop
describes attendance, retention, and
persistence gaps occurring among
Latino males focusing on degree
aspirations of these individuals who
persist from their first to their second
year at one community college in
California. Leave with suggestions
and recent research on how to
engage Latino males in college.

- This session discusses findings from
international case studies of six
countries (Australia, South Africa,
Ireland, Norway, Netherlands,
U.S.) in which COEs Pell Institute
is partnering to prepare the U.S.
case study. The case study focuses
on recent efforts to widen college participation in each of the countries.
This research was commissioned
by the Higher Education Funding
Council for England and the Office
for Fair Access, two agencies
that work with higher education
providers in England to promote
widening participation. This case
study examines the evidence for
impact and effectiveness of efforts
to widen participation as well as the
structure of the educational system
and the extent to which systemic
factors make progress for students
from disadvantaged backgrounds
more or less likely. In addition to
a summary of key strategies for
widening participation, speakers
discuss what lessons TRIO staff can
learn from international efforts with
similar goals and different contexts.

- TRIO programs, as well as other
federal education programs, were
established not only to promote
greater educational equity for lowincome
and first-generation students
but also to promote equity within
the American society as a whole.
After more than four decades, how far has the U.S. actually come
in meeting these goals and what
are the current policy barriers to
meeting them? Examine practices
and indicators used by colleges to
address issues of equity as well as
their implications for TRIO programs.

- SSS personnel supporting students
with disabilities tread a very fine line
in trying to sort out what services
MUST be provided for access and
what services SHOULD be provided
to foster the success anticipated
for TRIO participants. For example,
is tutoring an accommodation or
a support service? Is there ever a
time when it is both? This session
explores how to sort out the role of
disability service provider from the
role of SSS project personnel, how
to monitor the use and allocability
of resources in support of these
respective activities, and how best
to make sure that faculty, staff, and
students understand and respect
both of the hats you wear.
