- There are several available options for the management of diabetes mellitus. However, there remain unmet needs to the management of this chronic disease. Emerging therapies have been designed to provide alternative options, but not resolve the unmet needs. Currently, there is evidence of incretns (exedin-4 backbone and human GLP-1 backbone agents), sodium glucose co-transporter inhibitors, and ultra-long acting insulins. These agents have advantages and disadvantages to current treatment, but may have a promising role in the management of diabetes mellitus.
