- Fifty years after the end of Vatican II, where are we as a Church today? Have we lived up to
the joys and hopes expressed or are we still trying to find our way? We as the People of

Pope Francis to continue the renewal proposed so long ago. The challenges are many but so
also are the possibilities.

John Dear - Thomas Merton's Lessons of Peace and Nonviolence
Conference : 2015 National Conference: Love Radically. Live Faithfully.
Speaker(s) :
|
Download Format(s) : MP3 |
|

|
|
|
- Longtime activist, author and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Rev. John Dear will reflect on
Thomas Mertons powerful example and encouragement to fulfill our vocations as
peacemakers, based on Johns new book, Thomas Merton, Peacemaker: Meditations on
Merton, Peacemaking and the Spiritual Life (Orbis, April, 2015). John will explore Mertons
lessons on peace and nonviolence and invite everyone to love radically and live faithfully as
Thomas Merton did by becoming Gospel peacemakers in a world of total violence and war.
|
- In this session, John will explore the link between prayer and contemplation, and peace and
nonviolence; the willingness to change, grow and open our hearts in universal,
compassionate love (as Merton did at Fourth and Walnut in Louisville); the willingness to
speak out prophetically on the issues of life and death (as Merton did on war, nuclear
weapons, race, and environmental destruction); the connection between our interior peace
and nonviolence and the worlds peace and nonviolence; the discovery of Gods peace and
nonviolence; the ever-deepening communion with all people, all creatures, and all creation as
the path ahead; and the necessity to help support and build the global grassroots movement
of peace and nonviolence, as Merton did. Through the life and writings of Thomas Merton,
John Dear will encourage us to follow the nonviolent Jesus into the world of violence, racism
and war as Gospel peacemakers.
|
- Rev. John Dear is an internationally known author, lecturer and peace activist. His thirty
books include Living Peace, Jesus the Rebel, The Nonviolent Life, The God of Peace,

- The digital age has created space for a feminist voice that did not exist in the past and social

- For the past 21 years of experiences, Woori Theology Institute has clearly realized that
there have been a beautiful rhetoric or a party of words often found in the Church
hierarchys documents or statements without implementation of them. Therefore

at all levels between laypeople and clergy through which we could and should make it
communion of communities.
