- While the impact a person with ADHD has on a marriage is well known, often the deepest
hurt of all is the pain the non-ADHD spouse feels by believing that the failures of his/
her ADHD spouse is a sign of not caring. Most often the spouse with ADHD is the one
who comes to coaching, but we sometimes forget that the non-ADHD spouse may feel
betrayed and unloved. This session addresses how coaching can also be beneficial for
the non-ADHD spouse as he/she learns how the challenges of ADHD impact a marriage
and to more effectively communicate toward a loving relationship.

- Scientists have been able to peer into the brain and to isolate genes for about two
decades and we are beginning to understand the complex interplay of genetic and environmental
factors that shape how each brain designs itself to meet its owners particular
challenges. Extrapolating from this ever increasing scientific literature, we will imagine
the clinical benefits we can anticipate by the end of the current decade as scientific
progress continues to accelerate. Specifically, the emergence of resting state functional
imaging is revolutionizing how science is conducted. Resting state imaging studies can
be aggregated globally. This provides the basis for sufficiently large data bases to address
the complexity of gene by environment by development by brain region interactions.
The emergence of normative and clinical data bases will have as profound an effect on
the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD as height and weight growth charts have had on
the physical health of children.
