  • Paul Bay DMin BCC, Cardiovascular Chaplain, Indiana University Health, Indianapolis, IN
  • This workshop challenges us to use research findings to define/prioritize those whom we see for chaplaincy care. We move from a passive to an active chaplaincy care provider stance. It pushes us to use research to see patients who get the greatest benefit/outcome from our care. We will look at a randomized controlled study of over 200 heart study patients, comparing effectiveness of chaplaincy care for those identified as spiritually distressed vs. those not defined as spiritually distressed. Focus will also be given on how we can communicate our effectiveness to administrators.
  • Participant Goals: Charting our own course: Studying the map to analyze research findings (mine and others) to prioritize chaplaincy care Turning the ship: Making a mental/behavioral shift from referral-based service (passive) to spiritual assessment service (active) Moving the ship forward: Learning to do research and provide chaplaincy care at the same time

  • Those who minister to the bereaved serve as a stabilizing presence in the uncertain waters of loss and grief. A healing presence is best offered when attention is given to ones own experiences of loss, allowing an emotionally informed hope to nurture one's authentic, supportive presence. The universal nature of grief allows shared understanding, the unique nature of grief calls for continued learning and respect for the process. This intensive invites participants to reflect on personal loss, connect it to current bereavment theory, and offer clear ideas, such as creative ritual, for bereavement ministry
  • Participant Goals: Utilize a working understanding of Stage Theory and the Dual Process Model in Bereavement Theory Identify healing opportunities for the bereaved through creative ritual Apply skills of motivational interviewing to clinical work Reflect on bereavement ministry through the lens of emotionally informed hope as an alternative to the concerns and limitations of counter transference
