- An Innovative Model of Care in a Headache Unit in Colombia: Clinical Results from a Pilot Phase
Michel Volcy Gomez, MD
At the conclusion of this presentation, attendees should be better able to:
Explain the clinical characterization of headache in a Specialized Headache Center in
Latin-America.
Recognize how new models of patient care with Primary Headaches can make possible to increase
the amount of attentions and minimize the progression and chronification risks of headaches.
Determine the real impact of a model care focused on patients with Primary Headaches throughout
an interdisciplinary intervention, which in the midterm, will translate into greater efficiency
(optimization in resources), effectiveness (improvement of clinical outcomes and quality of life
and therefore, reduction of the overall care costs.
Acknowledge the challenges and needs surrounding headache patient attention in a
Latin-American country, and how can these be changed throughout new paradigms.
Recognize how IHCD-Beta 3 Criteria do work in clinical settings in Latin-American patients.
Applying very carefully every single one of them both final diagnosis as medical treatment can be
much more successful.
Chronic primary headaches do exist in Latin-America. This finding make, along with all the factors
involved into the progression and chronification processes, that all of us are responsible in order to
improve headache care, medical education, pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatments.

- Differential Cellular Localization of Antioxidant Enzymes in the Trigeminal Ganglion
Marmoru Shibata, MD, PhD
At the conclusion of this presentation, attendees should be better able to:
Describe the localization of satellite glial cells (SGCs) in the trigeminal ganglion.
Describe the functional roles of SGCs with respect to the maintenance of homeostasis in the
trigeminal ganglion.

oxygen species (ROS).
Describe the differential localization of ROS-decomposing enzymes in the trigeminal ganglion.
Define the localization of transient receptor potential vanilloid subfamily, member 1 (TRPV1) in
the trigeminal ganglion.
Comprehend that excess nociceptive stimulation via TRPV1 can cause ROS-mediated cell demise
of the trigeminal ganglion neurons.
