- - Basic Pain Mechanisms and How They Can Trigger Migraine
Steven B. Graff-Radford , DDS, FAHS
At the conclusion of this presentation, attendees should be better able to:
Describe the neurobiology and neurophysiology of input into the (central) nervous
system from trigeminal nociceptors related to the mid and lower face that cause
increased central sensitization in the trigeminal nucleus caudalis and kindle
protracted and difficult to manage migraine attacks
Identify the benefit of incorporating treatment regimens that include decreasing
nociceptive input from mid and lower face structures that complicate the treatment
of migraine and the participant will be able to explain to the patient how the painful
jaw and neck muscles can aggravate the headache disorder, requiring focused
treatment of those structures to ameliorate the headache
Differentiate the interrelationship between orofacial pain mechanisms and
headache, including migraine, and how addressing the contribution that orofacial
structures make to headache can positively impact the response to medications
used in headache management, including decreasing or even eliminating
medications that would be needed under normal or usual circumstances
