Course CFP-1. The Cranio-Facial Pain Foundation Course introduces participants to the importance of myofascial trigger points in the evaluation and management of patients with orofacial pain and dysfunction, tension-type headaches, and migraines, among others. Myofascial trigger points are a common feature of nearly all pain syndromes, including fibromyalgia, and are characterized by persistent pain, loss of function, and movement impairments. Treatment involves manual therapy techniques, dry needling/injections, correcting biomechanical and postural dysfunction, and restoring normal movement patterns. This two-day workshop is presented to teach the techniques of trigger point identification, effective manual techniques of inactivation of trigger points, and restoration of function. Students will be introduced to the scientific basis of trigger point therapy. Furthermore, this course includes a review of precipitating and perpetuating factors, and will introduce participants to the principles of intramuscular manual therapy (IMT), also called dry needling, and injection therapy. Each teaching block consists of an introductory lecture and demonstration, followed by supervised hands-on practice in small groups. This is the first course of a series of three leading to Certification in Orofacial Trigger Point Dry Needling. This is a training program with immediate clinical applicability upon completion. This course is intended for Dentists and Physical Therapists.

Each year, millions of patients in our practices are treated for painful conditions with controlled substances whose therapeutic benefits are accompanied by psychoactive effects. Recent indicators reveal that the misuse and abuse of prescription drugs are rising, and we are faced with the challenge of minimizing the potential for misuse without impeding patients' access to needed care. This symposium will provide specific knowledge and skills associated with safe prescribing and will cover areas of epidemiology, legal and regulatory issues, as well as clinical strategies for managing difficult patient situations.

On completing this course, participants should be able to: 1. Select patients who are appropriate candidates for therapy with opioids, including methadone. 2. Define risk factors for potential misuse or abuse of opioid analgesics and outline a time-efficient method of screening for risk. 3. Educate patients about methadone's unique pharmacologic properties, such as its long duration of action and absence of euphoric effect (because lack of knowledge of these characteristics on the part of physicians and patients has contributed to inadvertent overdoses and fatalities). 4. Follow a careful, evidence-based protocol for starting patients on opioid analgesic therapy, whether from a drug-naive state or in transition from another short- or long-acting opioid analgesic. 5. Take appropriate steps to monitor for effectiveness of the therapy and to minimize the potential for medication diversion, abuse, or addiction.

The Headache Cooperative of New England (HCNE), in conjunction with the AAOP, will honor the memory of Sheldon Gross, DDS, by presenting a full-day comprehensive headache preconference. Shelly was a pioneer in orofacial pain, past President of the AAOP and long-time Board Member and Treasurer of HCNE. The course will include classification and treatment considerations for primary headache disorders, as well as highlight important secondary headache disorders of particular interest to orofacial pain specialists. The Board of Directors of HCNE will serve as the faculty for this special tribute to Shelly Gross.
