In treating these diagnoses, a strong clinical correlation is seen between pelvic and abdominal dysfunctions such as persistent diastasis recti and abdominal muscle neurological inhibition. Understanding the relationship between pelvic and common abdominal deficits is becoming an essential part of the successful medical management of these patients. Case studies, pertinent research and treatment protocols will be presented.

  • Pamela Ellsworth, MD, Associate Professor of Urology, University Urological Associates, Inc., Providence, RI
  • Daytime urinary incontinence is common in children. Dysfunctional voiding and overactive bladder are the more common causes of daytime incontinence but other etiologies need to be excluded. Identification and treatment is important as the consequences of voiding dysfunction include urinary incontinence, UTIs, potential renal damage, and bowel dysfunction and future adult LUTs. The management of pediatric voiding dysfunction relies on appropriate evaluation and management and often involves multiple therapeutic modalities and a coordinated team approach. This course will focus on how to appropriately evaluate pediatric voiding dysfunction and differentiate between the different types. In addition, the indications for further evaluation, including urodynamic and radiologic studies will be discussed. The role and outcome of the various therapeutic modalities including behavioral and biofeedback therapy and pharmacologic therapy will be presented. Current management options for refractory voiding dysfunction will be reviewed.
