Balaz Imre Bodai, MD

Balaz Imre Bodai, MD Biography Despite some wishful reports, breast cancer, worldwide, is on the rise. In the United States alone, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) predictions for the numerical increase in invasive breast cancers as the baby boom generation ages is expected to reach 480,000/year by 2017. While similar statistics are not available internationally, there is every reason to believe that such dramatic increases will be global. The ‘Global Journey’ is the name adopted for the introduction of Breast Cancer Research Stamps (BCRS) in all nations. The mission is predicated on the highly successful BCRS program initiated in the United States, by Congressional direction, in 1998. Since its inception, the BCRS has raised nearly $60 million through the sales of 900 million stamps. The story of the Breast Cancer Research Stamp and its current positioning in the world will be discussed. Affiliation

Donna Brassil, MA, RN, CURN, CCRC Biography Nursing research is the term used to describe the evidence used to support nursing practice. Nursing education places emphasis upon the use of evidence from research in order to rationalize nursing interventions. Nursing research falls largely into two areas: quantitative research and qualitative research. Clinical research nursing is a specialty within nursing. Research nurses are specially trained nurses responsible for safeguarding research subjects and maintaining the integrity of the research protocol. These nurses must balance patients’ clinical needs with the needs of the research protocol. Participants will leave the session with a clear understanding of the difference between the two terms. Paula Forest, MSN, OCN, GNP, CHPN, ARNP Biography As the graying of America continues, we are seeing increased numbers of older adults in our clinics and inpatient units. In our personal lives, we are caring for aging parents and friends. As we age, mental health is an important but sometimes undervalued part of total health. How do we know if our patient/loved one is depressed, suffering from the onset of dementia, or experiencing delirium in the hospital setting? How do we start the discussion, who do we make an appointment with, what can we do? This presentation will list the characteristics of each diagnosis, listing similarities and differences. Case studies will highlight appropriate testing and care. Communication “pearls” will be discussed that will help the provider discuss this difficult diagnosis with both the patient and family members. Affiliation
