Michael J. Gelfand

Michael J. Gelfand Biography MICHAEL J. GELFAND, Florida Bar Board Certified Real Estate Lawyer, Certified Circuit and County Civil Court Mediator and Arbitrator is the senior partner of Gelfand & Arpe, P.A. With locations in West Palm Beach and Boca Raton, his firm emphasizes a community association law practice, counseling associations and owners how to set legitimate goals and how to effectively achieve goals. Mr. Gelfand is also a co-owner of ARC Mediation, Palm Beach County’s largest mediation and arbitration firm. Mr. Gelfand was recently selected as the Legislative Review Committee Co-Vice Chair (Real Property) of The Florida Bar’s Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section. He is the immediate past-chair of Section’s Condominium and Planned Development Committee. In addition he is a member of the National Association of Parliamentarians, American College of Real Estate Lawyers and the College of Community Association Lawyers. Mr. Gelfand is a sought after commentator on community association law topics. The American Bar Association, The Florida Bar and the University of Miami, among others, have repeatedly requested Mr. Gelfand to provide continuing legal education credit lectures for lawyers. The Florida Bar publishes his works including "Alternate Dispute Resolution, Arbitration and Mediation" and "Condominium and Homeowner Association Liens" and statutory updates. He also contributed to Harrison's legal treatise Florida Admissibility of Evidence. Michael Gelfand encourages community involvement by example, serving as a Special Master for the City of Boca Raton after volunteering fifteen years as chair of Boca Raton's Builders' Board of Adjustment and Appeals. In addition to State and local Bar efforts, he volunteers for a number of public school efforts, including serving as the real property attorney member of the Palm Beach County School Board’s Construction and Oversight Review Committee, Past-Chair of the Youth Orchestra of Palm Beach County, Youth Court Magistrate Judge and School Advisory Counsel Past- Chair of Dreyfoos High School of the Arts which is a top 25 in the nation high school as reported in both US News & World Report and Newsweek. Robert L. Gent

Robert L. Gent Biography Robert L. Gent serves as the president of the Board of Directors of the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA). IDA's goal is to preserve the nighttime environment and protect our heritage of dark skies through improved quality outdoor lighting. IDA has over 11,000 members in 75 countries. He is also the past president of the Astronomical League, a nonprofit federation of 275 astronomical societies and nearly 17,000 members. Mr. Gent has been a member of IESNA and CIE (professional lighting associations) for eight years. He has addressed the subject of how to control light pollution at state legislative sessions, at IESNA regional meetings, at dozens of city council meetings, at county board hearings, at national agencies, and at international conferences. Mr. Gent graduated with a BA in Mathematics at Arizona State University, and, shortly thereafter, was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the USAF as a space systems officer. Nearly two decades before the Hubble Space Telescope was launched, he performed research using a network of USAF 24-inch infrared space telescopes in geosynchronous earth orbits. After many worldwide assignments and several military decorations, he retired from the US Air Force in 1993 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He taught astronomy at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona (1997-98), and also taught astronomy at Gulf Coast Community College in Florida (1992-93). Additionally, he taught mathematics at the university level in 1982-83. He holds a Master of Science in International Relations from Troy State University's German campus, and a B.A. in Astronomy from the University of Texas. He is a graduate of the USAF Air Command and Staff College and has completed graduate equivalent studies in computer science through a several Department of Defense graduate schools. He has traveled widely visiting all 50 US states and 40 countries. Mr. Gent has a passion for sharing the wonders of our night sky, and he has given more than 200 "volunteer" astronomy talks to schools, scout groups, churches, national parks, and other organizations. For four years, he chaired the Astronomical League's National Young Astronomer Award. At their 2000 annual awards ceremony, the IDA announced that minor planet "1986 RG3" was renamed "Bob Gent" by the International Astronomical Union. This award was given to him for his outstanding volunteer service protecting the nighttime environment and preserving our heritage of dark skies. At their 2001 annual meeting, the IDA presented the first annual Hoag- Robinson Award to Robert Gent for outstanding service with light pollution legislative projects. Mr. Gent is listed in "Who's Who in America" and "Who's Who in the World." Affiliation
