  • Rohde, Luis A. MD, PhD
  • In the past, researchers and clinicians assumed that ADHD occurs in adults only if those individuals had ADHD in childhood. Recent research has shown that while many adults with ADHD indeed have the onset of the disorder in childhood, a substantial proportion of individuals with ADHD in adulthood do not show signs of the disorder until their adult years. This new vision of multiple pathways to ADHD in adulthood will be addressed in a three-part presentation: 1) Professor Luis A. Rohde will discuss the recent research data on adult onset ADHD, describe these individuals and predictors for this pathway, and integrate old and new visions about pathways to ADHD in adults; 2) Professor Thomas E. Brown will provide a demonstration interview with an actor, Ryan Kennedy, portraying JFK when he was a young adult, and show some ways to identify ADHD symptoms in adults where childhood onset may not be clear; 3) Professors Rohde and Brown will discuss how new research on different pathways to ADHD in adulthood suggests the need for change in how adults should be evaluated to determine an ADHD diagnosis.

  • Luis Rohde and Dr. Thomas Brown
  • Until recently, ADHD was always conceptualized as a child-onset disorder. Even the newest classification system in Psychiatry (DSM-5) incorporated this notion by including the disorder under the umbrella of neurodevelopmental disorders. In this presentation, Professor Rohde will introduce data from three cohort studies in different countries (New Zealand, UK and Brazil) suggesting an adult-onset of ADHD for a substantial proportion of the adults in these population-based samples. He will reconcile why these findings are different from previous findings, addressing methodological differences between clinical and population samples, the role of full-syndrome versus subthreshold symptoms in childhood, the impact of comorbidity in the ADHD phenotypic presentation in adults, and different information sources in childhood (parents and teachers) and adulthood (self-report). Based on research in progress in large data sets, Professor Rohde will describe potential predictors for this adult-onset trajectory including the role of IQ, family support, severity of symptoms and comorbidity. Finally, both a tentative integration between old and new vision of ADHD trajectories from childhood to adulthood and a translation of the research findings for clinical applications will be provided.
