  • Many children with ADHD experience difficulties in school that may actually be the result of weaknesses in reading or language comprehension. When do low grades, homework challenges, or reading difficulties indicate an underlying learning weakness? Can these learning weaknesses be overcome? This session guides parents through new research that reveals the symptoms, causes, and solutions for these learning challenges so their students can learn to their full potential. Results from students with a variety of learning profiles and needs will be shared, including a recent analysis of students with ADHD.

The poster study which received one of four best research awards, among over 60 poster entries at this year's 2016 APSARD Conference , provided empirically derived answers to the questions of whether a diagnosis of ADHD is associated with "gifts " when compared to a non-ADHD control group. David Giwerc, Master Certified ADHD Coach, MCAC and Founder President, ADD Coach Academy will present and explain the results, conclusions of the current study and the implications for a new proposed pilot ADHD Coaching study. The new study is also based on a hypothesis of anecdotal experience with over 50 adult ADHD clients David coached using each individual's top, VIA signature strengths. David will also demonstrate the ADHD Coaching process with a volunteer participant, diagnosed with ADHD, who has completed the free VIA character strengths survey, and has their customized profile available at the presentation session. • This presentation is intended to explore the legal requirements under the IDEA to provide students with disabilities special education services that provide a free appropriate public education and how a child's potential should be considered in that analysis. The law clearly does not permit maximization of a child's potential. However, it is becoming more and more important for IEP teams to set expectations based upon an individual studentís potential, and then to assess progress on whether enough movement toward that potential has been achieved. How to accomplish these tasks is not altogether clear, but the IDEA and the embedded right to an appropriate education demands that the dialogue now begins on these fundamental questions.

  • The DSM-5 description of ADHD is useful, but it is incomplete and outdated in terms of recent research. Current DSM diagnostic criteria are based on research with children ages 4 to 17 and do not include what has been learned about impairments of executive functions that are central to ADHD in chldren and adults. Recent research has also shown that some who did not have ADD in childhood develop ADHD impairments in adolescence and adulthood, long past the current age of onset criteria. This presentation will identify research findings that warrant rethinking of our current understanding of ADHD across the lifespan.
