  • We all tell ourselves little lies because they make us feel better in the moment. We rationalize choices by coming up with semi-plausible reasons to justify not doing what we know we should. People with ADHD may do this more often because the inconsistency of ADHD and difficulties with self-activation make it harder to get going on those required tasks. Learn the most common rationalizations that people with ADHD tell themselves, how to counter them, and see yourself as someone who acts with integrity.
  • Learning Objectives 1. Attendees will be able to explain how the executive functioning weakness associated with ADHD create more inconsistent performance and therefore more difficult or uncomfortable situations. 2. Attendees will be able to explain how these difficult situations give people with ADHD more things to lie to themselves about and more reasons to believe those lie. 3. Attendees will be able to describe how today’s bad decisions create more difficult situations tomorrow which leads to more bad decisions tomorrow. 4. Attendees will be able to list and describe some of the most common lies that people with ADHD tell themselves. 5. Attendees will be able to use their understanding of self-activation, time horizon, and temporal discounting to counterbalance the lure of these lies.

  • Adolescents with ADHD often get lost in the shuffle or miss out on an optimal treatment regimen as they go through periods of transition in their lives. Failure to adjust the treatment strategy to fit their needs and to be compatible with their level of development can lead to poor outcomes. Without this type of care, adolescents and young adults will fail to follow treatment recommendations and possibly be lost to follow-up altogether. This workshop will discuss the important points of transition in the lives of adolescents with ADHD and explore the ways in which care can be tailored to their particular needs. When they are invested in managing their condition in developmentally appropriate ways, their outcomes improve. Use of techniques such as motivational interviewing can also improve adherence to instructions and recommendations made by the provider by helping teens and young adults to see the bigger picture for themselves. Treatment options for these age groups will be reviewed, with an emphasis on medication and also including ADHD coaching, counseling and other behavior management strategies. Participants will receive an update on any innovations in treatment and new developments in best-practices guidelines.
  • Learning Objectives 1. Describe the differences in presentation and needs of adolescents and young adults and how they differ from other age groups. 2. List treatment options available to individuals with ADHD in these age groups and discuss the advantages and limitations of each. 3.
