  • Michael Milham, MD, PhD, New York University
  • 1. Toward Discovery Neuroscience of ADHD - The functional imaging community is in the midst of a major paradigm shift in its efforts to identify brain-based markers of ADHD. Traditionally focused on identifying the neural correlates of particular domains of cognitive dysfunction in ADHD, recent years have witnessed a call for the adoption of discovery-science based approaches, that rely on the application of sophisticated data-mining techniques to large-scale imaging datasets to generate and test novel hypotheses—much like the model put forth by the genetics community. This presentation will review recent demonstrations of the utility of resting state functional MRI approachers for discovery science and the feasibility of rapidly accelerating the pace of discovery through multisite collaborative efforts. In particular, the results of the 1000 Functional Connectomes Project and ADHD-200 efforts will be discussed.
  • James McCracken, MD, University of California Los Angeles
  • 2. Translational Research to Enhance Cognitive Control - This presentation will review the importance of improving cognitive functioning in ADHD as an important but incompletely fulfilled need with current treatments. Progress in research on cognition has provided improved biomarkers of functioning, and basic research has suggested new treatment strategies for ADHD. The results of a recently completed NIH clinical trial of children with ADHD will demonstrate the promise of applying basic neuroscience understandings to advance treatment for ADHD and related disorders.
