  • Quick Tips for Parents: Preventing Problematic Behavior: Children with ADHD can display a number of problematic behaviors including difficulty with attention regulation, poor impulse control as well as problems with oppositional behavior, temper tantrums and poor follow through. Behavioral modification provides parents with a number of tools and resources to address such problematic behaviors. However, at times, behavioral modification strategies are reactive and not proactive. This presentation provides parents/caregivers with effective proactive strategies used to prevent the onset of problematic and disruptive behavior in children with ADHD.
  • Quick Tips for Parents: Preventing Problematic Behavior: 1. A brief overview of common comorbid conditions such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder and associated problematic behaviors commonly seen in children with ADHD will be discussed. 2. A number of variables contribute to the onset of disruptive behaviors including things such as ineffective commands, unstructured activities and the "cohersion pain model." These factors will be discussed so caregivers will be able to recognize potential setting events and pitfalls that contribute to the onset of problematic behavior. 3. The use of precision commands has been demonstrated as an effective intervention that increases compliance rates and decreases the onset of significant disruptive behavior. Parents and caregivers will learn how to effectively give their children requests so as to increase the likelihood their child with ADHD will follow through with a given request. 4. Children with ADHD respond best to frequent cues and prompts that help remind them of the things they need to be doing so as to decrease the onset of problematic behavior. Caregivers will be shown ways to effectively prompt their children with ADHD through the use of positive reinforcement, token economies and attending. 5. Having a positive and resilient relationship with children helps decrease disruptive behaviors at home. Specific strategies as to how caregivers can build and maintain a positive relationship with their children will be discussed.
