This session teaches parents and professionals what to consider when creating systems and structures so that they’ll work in the real world for kids with ADHD – without making things too complicated, or making it too hard on the adults (who may also have ADD, themselves).

  • In terms on non-medical interventions for adult ADHD, ADHD Coaching and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are often among the first options mentioned in terms of addressing the day-to-day difficulties faced by individuals with ADHD. At the same time there are many similarities of these two approaches for helping individuals with ADHD to better manage affairs in their daily lives, these approaches derive from different theoretical backgrounds and contexts and there are important differences in training, the manner in which professional services are delivered, and who is adequately trained and qualified to deliver the respective services. The aim of this session is to explore these various similarities, differences, limitations, and opportunities provided by ADHD Coaching and CBT for adult ADHD. The session will be led by an experienced ADHD Coach and psychologist who specializes in CBT for adult ADHD who will present their respective models and engage in a dialogue with each other and with the audience to examine these various topics.

  • Community professionals involved in the care of a child or teen with ADHD are often called upon to collaborate with schools and to exchange information with school personnel at formal or informal school meetings. Despite the intention to advocate for the needs of the student with ADHD, these encounters often turn into missed opportunities. Using a model of negotiation strategy drawn from the business world, this presentation will focus on how we can be more effective on behalf of our clients. We will address the “Shadow Negotiation”—unspoken attitudes, hidden agendas and competing goals—that can derail our efforts, and we will translate the Shadow Negotiation model into practical strategies that make the collaboration process more effective.

Clinical observations from hundreds of interviews with the parents of kids with ADHD will inform practical recommendations on topics such as the amount of time kids should play video games, difficulty transitioning from video games, irritability after playing games, social isolation, and a disinterest in other forms of play.

  • Most people with ADHD struggle with time management and doing the right things at the right times. This presentation will go beyond all the basic strategies and take a deeper look at the science of time awareness and time management so that attendees can really understand why time is such a struggle for those with ADHD. We will discuss the concepts of time horizon and temporal discounting to provide a foundation to understand why the strategies in the second half of the presentation work better. These strategies will help those with ADHD to see time more effectively by externalizing it and then feel time more effectively by building motivation to act towards the future.
