  • Halperin, Jeffrey M.; Co-Presenter: Betsy Hoza, PhD, University of Vermont, Burlington VT; Moderator: James Swanson, Ph.D.
  • This research symposium will describe, from a developmental perspective, the scientific rationale for why exercise and play are likely to be beneficial for young children with ADHD or ADHD-risk. Drawing from scientific literature including both 1) brain science work with animals and 2) applied work with children, mechanisms of how appropriately structured exercise and play might alter the adverse long-term trajectory associated with ADHD will be described. The structure and underlying principles of two existing intervention programs will be presented, and data from recent studies of the impact of aerobic exercise and prescribed play on ADHD severity will be examined. Directions for future research will be discussed.
  • Learning Objectives 1. Attendees will learn to view ADHD from a developmental perspective such that small yet persistent early improvements can have a very substantial effect over the lifespan. 2. Attendees will come to appreciate the positive impact of exercise and play on not only physical, but also psychological well-being. 3. Attendees will learn about the effects of physical exercise on neural and cognitive development. 4. Attendees will learn about the guiding principles and formats of two programs that have applied physical activity and/or play to children with ADHD or ADHD-risk. 5. Attendees will learn about the state of the empirical evidence for these existing programs.

This seminar will address common perceptions about ADHD and explore their relationship to the scientific evidence that supports or refutes them.

Discuss the impact of ADHD medication on growth.br> 4. Distinguish between facts and conjectures about ADHD medication and claims of sudden death. 5.
