  • This session will detail how young people with ADHD come into a negative contact with the criminal justice system and what steps we have taken, to reduce crime by providing more appropriate and effective interventions into the lives of those with ADHD. We will how our work has become a reality, including how we have trained key staff from education, police, prisons etc in understanding ADHD, screening for ADHD and improving their performance at work for sufferers and their families. We will show what you can do as a parent to reduce the risk for your child of entering criminal behaviour.
  • Avoiding the Juvenile System: What You Need to Know: 1. By the end of this session participants will understand the risks for young people with ADHD of falling into criminal patterns of behaviour, and their increased exposure to increased harm and risk of injury. 2. By the end of this session participants will identify the Tipping Points in a young persons life and be able to anticipate them and reduce their impact on their child’s life. 3. By the end of this session participants will be able to identify how they can best advocate for their child in the criminal justice system, recognizing constraints on their participation when appropriate. 4. Participants will recognize the key responses to the Tipping Points and be capable of improving outcomes for young people by following the quick and easy steps as a 'plan' for tackling the Tippin Points.

  • EEG Neurofeedback for ADHD: Review of the Science and New Findings: Dr. Lofthouse will begin the session with a brief introduction to neurofeedback and an overview of the current state of the field. This will be followed by Dr.'s Arnold and Lofthouse describing the design, results and implications of their recent NIMH-supported double-blind, randomized sham-controlled study. After questions from the audience, a CHADD PAB representative will present a selection of questions asked of ISNR last year, followed by a response to each question by an ISNR representative and a discussion of each response by Dr. Barkley. In conclusion, Dr. Barkley will lead a discussion of the session after which the remaining time will be devoted to general audience and panel discussion. This session will be chaired by Ann Abramowitz, Ph.D. (Department of Psychology and Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Emory University).

Coaching for adolescents and young adults with ADHD, while very complex, highly individualized, and intricate, provides exceptional support for reaching success in academics and life. An intimate view of this relationship and the vaired interactions that the coach and client experience in various scenarios will be included as part of the discussion.

  • Rights Under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and Section 504 – Translating Myths to Reality: 1. Provide key components of IDEA and Section 504 in relation to students with ADHD. 2. Describe the impact of recent amendments to the ADA on interpretation of Section 504 and their application to students with ADHD. 3.   • Research indicates that youth sport coaches may not be aware of the needs of young athletes with ADHD or diverse learning needs. Learning differences may be misunderstood or misinterpretted which can result a poor experience for the young athlete with ADHD. Although efforts are being made to provide education to coaches about inclusive coaching strategies, this session is intended to help parents collaborate with coaches and advocate for their child. This session will provide information and hands-on strategies for collaborating with their child's coach.
  • Working with Your Child's Sports Coach: 1. When given a particular behavior or learning need typically associated with ADHD, the learner will articulate one way that this may affect a child's performance in a team sport situation. 2. When given a description of a typical team sport activity, the learner will identify one potential problem that a child with ADHD may encounter. 3. When given a particular behavior or learning need typically associated with ADHD, the learner will articulate one way that coaching instruction can be changed to accommodate the child's learning need. 4. When presented with a role play situation, the learner articulate least one way that a parent could approach a coach to inform him/her about a child's learning needs. 5. The learner will idenitfy at least two ways that a child with ADHD could self-advocate during a team sport situation.

  • This workshop will review assessment and treatment strategies specifically geared toward boys and men with ADHD. Clinicians and parents will be assisted in making decisions whether or not medications will be needed, what nutritional/herbal treatments may be beneficial, and what types of counseling and/or coaching interventions are likely to be helpful. Throughout, issues of masculinity will be considered to inform participants how these are reflected in the manner in which boys, male teens and males present symptoms and respond to various treatments.
  • Masculinity and ADHD: 1. Participants will be able to identify specific settings where problem behaviors are most likely to emerge (home, school, work, and social/recreational) and what specific behaviors boys and men with ADHD typically present in each setting. 2. Participants will be able to identify marker behaviors that may be helpful when ruling out comorbid or look-alike conditions. 3. Participants will learn which assessment techniques are most likely to render results that assist in making appropriate diagnosis of ADHD in boys, male teens and males. 4. Paticipants will learn to identify those males with ADHD who are likely to respond better to treatment with medications, rather than with psychosocial interventions. 5. Participants will learn which counseling and coaching strategies are most likely to be effective when treating boys, male teens and adult men with ADHD.

  • Medication Update: This session will provide an update of medication treatments for ADHD across the lifespan. We will review data for approved stimulants and non-stimulants, as well as frequently used off-label treatments. We will also consider the role of combined treatment.
  • Medication Update: 1. Understand the array of medications available for ADHD treatment. 2. Understand similarities and differences between different medication classes in terms of how they work, what their profile of response and tolerability is, and how to best use the different treatments. 3. Discuss the limits of medication treatments – what are appropriate treatment targets and what are not, when to think about non-medication treatments, and when to think about combined medication treatments. 4. Clinical anecdotes and the presenter's personal anecdotes will be shared.
  • Who Has Time to Sleep?: 1. Identify and define the sleep issues commonly associated with ADHD, such as problems getting to sleep, difficulty waking up, and daytime sleepiness (especially in the face of low stimulating situations). 2.   • Change Strategies Used in CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) for Adult ADHD: About 4% of the adult population has Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). While medications are the most effective single treatment, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an efficacious psychosocial treatment for this population. This workshop is designed to review specific change strategies used in CBT for adult ADHD.
  • Change Strategies Used in CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) for Adult ADHD: 1. Prepare specific therapy goals with their adult patients with ADHD. 2. Recognize intervention strategies used to address procrastination, disorganization, and time management problems commonly reported by adults with ADHD. 3. Identify the common distorted thoughts reported by adults with ADHD and how they undermine coping efforts in these patients. 4. Identifying and addressing common motivational issues encountered in counseling adults with ADHD. 5. Describe strategies with which to help adults with ADHD to better implement effective coping strategies.
