C09 Oral Surgery 1: Making "Surgical" Extractions Easier and Faster
Recommended for Doctors, Assistants
Conference : The 144th Chicago Dental Society Midwinter Meeting 2009

Download Format(s) :
MP3
$45.00

  • Karl Koerner, DDS, MS, Draper, UT; Head, Department of Oral Surgery, Scottsdale Center for Dental Education
  • Extractions are a mainstay of general practice yet dental school doesn’t adequately prepare you to handle unexpected difficulties and complications that inevitably arise. This presentation helps bridge that gap. It covers many techniques and instruments reserved for an oral surgery residency. In this era of more esthetic pontics and immediate implant placement, attention is paid to “atraumatic” extractions, not just doing it quickly at the expense of bone. Dr. Karl Koerner also teaches socket bone grafting reviewing what works and what doesn’t from his own personal experience over many years. He will also talk about managing potential bleeding problems with patients on aspirin, Coumadin, and Plavix.

  • Fixed prosthodontic procedures comprise about one-third of the revenue in a typical general practice. About one-half of the procedures in fixed prosthodontics can be legally delegated to staff. Bring your clinical staff members to this program, and then the team will significantly increase productivity and clinical quality. The presentation includes the materials, devices, concepts, and techniques in fixed prosthodontics and suggests those areas that can be accomplished as a team or alone by supervised staff.

Single extraction expertise is taken to the next level applying it to many other procedures, such as multiple extractions and pre-prosthetic surgery, alveoplasty, exostosis removal (including tori), frenectomies (labial and lingual), continuous-lock sutures and more. Dr. Koerner will show you how it's not a long stretch to implant placement. He covers using socket bone grafting as an easy method to treat inadvertent sinus perforations. These procedures will round out your knowledge base giving you confidence to do more minor oral surgery in general practice.

  • Building teamwork is a challenge in any office. But team building is worth the effort, according to speaker Ms. Rosemary Bray. Here are seven questions you need to answer to meet the challenge. How do you find the right people? How do you encourage spirit, commitment, and motivation? How do you continue growth and results? What makes those top teams seem to “tick”? How does having a good team lead to the practice’s success? How does it affect the patients, their response to us, and their cooperation? What is the doctor’s role on the team?
  • Ms. Bray will help answer these questions and more to help you build teamwork in your office.
