Paul Shaughnessy MD
Biography
Paul Shaughnessy MD joined the Texas Transplant Institute in 2001 as the Clinical Director and the Collections Director for the Bone Marrow Transplant Service. His research focuses on the prevention and treatment of steroid resistant GvHD
After earning his Medical Degree from Indiana University, Dr. Shaughnessy completed his postgraduate training at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio Texas. He continued working at Wilford Hall Medical Center in the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit until joining Texas Transplant Institute.
Dr. Shaughnessy is a member of the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation.

Karen Syrjala PhD
Biography
Karen Syrjala is Director of the Biobehavioral Sciences Department, and Director of the Survivorship Program at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (a member of the LIVESTRONG™ Survivorship Center of Excellence Network). She provides clinical consulting services at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and is on the Psychiatry Department faculty at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
Dr. Syrjala’s research and clinical care have focused on the long term outcomes and late effects of treatment for hematopoietic stem cell transplant survivors. In addition to evaluating their general quality of life, she has measured distress and sexual function, neurocognitive outcomes of treatment, and interventions to reduce long term biobehavioral complications.
