Do You See What I See?
Conference : Making It Work: Flourishing in Dynamic Systems

  • Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.
  • The growing community of professional chaplains has the task of ministering to increasingly diverse clients. Chaplains in hospitals, chaplains in hospice ministry, chaplains on college campuses, chaplains who serve in prisons, and chaplains in the military are confronted daily with a varied group of persons in need of spiritual guidance and counsel.
  • Current research on the limbic system and its influence on the way we see others, perceive others and prejudge others shows that our perceptions affect our ability to minister as effectively as God would have us minister. What we see affects how we minister.
  • Starting from Dr. Janice Hale’s 50-year-old mantra that “difference does not mean deficient” is a way to approach our ministry with such a wide (and beautiful) diversity on a day-to-day basis. This session will help us become more aware of our own preconceptions and inspire us to celebrate the differences among us and those we serve.
  • The Reverend Wright is pastor emeritus of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, IL, where he served for 36 years. Dr. Wright's efforts made Trinity one of the most politically active and socially conscious churches in the nation, with programs ranging from HIV/AIDS outreach programs and two senior housing complexes, to a federally funded childcare program for low-income families and the church's newly formed Kwamie Nkrumah Academy to serve students on Chicago's South Side. As a result of Rev. Wright's commitment to higher education, Trinity has provided scholarships to graduating high school seniors since 1977. More than 1,000 of the scholarship recipients have finished both college and graduate schools.

Leading Adaptive Change

  • Valerie Ulstad MD MPH MPA
  • Adaptive leadership helps map the territory of human behavior, describing what people do and how they behave in groups. More importantly, it reveals what people exercising leadership can do with some deeper understanding of fear and resistance to change. Adaptive leadership is a set of concepts, practices and language that provide clarity and can facilitate others to make progress on their work.
  • This approach applies well to problems that challenge us today where there are complex, refractory problems, perceived scarcities of time and attention, and dramatic, fast-paced change with associated bewildering urgency. Practicing adaptive leadership is a way to intentionally and effectively do what we do anyway every day: deal with the human condition. Applying the fundamentals of adaptive leadership can help us be more effective and purposeful in our leadership work and in our work of being engaged citizens.
  • Val Ulstad MD MPH MPA is an educator, facilitator and coach in independent practice in Bloomington, MN. She has been a cardiologist for over 20 years in academic and private-practice settings, and has served in a variety of leadership roles. Dr. Ulstad directs the Archibald Bush Leadership Fellowship leadership development program and the Courage to Imagine professional renewal retreat series for Bush Medical Fellows for the Bush Foundation, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Center for Courage and Renewal. She is also currently serving as Senior Fellow to Minnesota Council of Nonprofits.

  • Paul Bay D.Min.
  • This workshop challenges us to use the information we have to identify who needs our care most. It empowers us to measure the difference we made spiritually. Do you leave the hospital aware of unmet needs of distressed patients? I do, daily. My research identifies spiritually distressed patients prior to care. Outcomes of interventions of those seen/not seen with/without spiritual distress are compared over time.

  • Melanie Childers, MDiv MA BCC
  • Few of us like to acknowledge the dark side of religion, but we know it exists. Because of our location outside houses of worship, chaplains are in a unique position to support persons who have been wounded by spiritual leaders or in rigid religious environments. Participants in this workshop will be invited to learn about the similarities and differences between spiritual abuse and other types of abuse, as well as the particular path toward healing from spiritual abuse, and chaplains' role in helping coordinate such healing.
