This presentation shows how Howard Gardners theory of multiple intelligences provides a powerful tool through which individuals abilities can be highlighted and worked with to improve motivation, self-esteem, insight, and healing. The presentation includes interactive experiences of the eight intelligences, a PowerPoint presentation connecting theory to practice, a hands-on demonstration, and a practical planning tool pastoral counselors and educators can use to tailor strategies linked to specific objectives.

Dr. Thomas Armstrong is an award-winning author and speaker with over thirty years of teaching experience from the primary through the doctoral level, and over one million copies of his books in print on issues related to learning and human development. He is the author of thirteen books including The Human Odyssey: Navigating the Twelve Stages of Life; The Best Schools: How Human Development Research Should Inform Educational, Practice, Multiple Intelligences in the Classroom; In Their Own Way, Awakening Your Childs Natural Genius, 7 Kinds of Smart; The Myth of the A.D.D. Child, ADD/ADHD Alternatives in the Classroom; and Awakening Genius in the Classroom. He has written for Ladies Home Journal, Family Circle (where he received awards from the Educational Press Association, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals), Parenting (where he was a regularly featured columnist), Mothering (where he was a contributing editor), and over thirty other periodicals, journals, and edited books. He has appeared on several national and international television and radio programs, including NBCs "The Today Show," "CBS This Morning," "CNN," the "BBC" and "The Voice of America.

Plenary 2: Maureen Walker - "Healing Power, Creating Hope"

Maureen Walker, Ph.D.

In her presentation, Dr. Walker will examine the impact of power paradigms on growth and creativity, identify the relational competencies that foster expanded imagination of human possibility, and illustrate the healing processes (e.g., mutual empathy) that facilitate transformational shifts in power-salient relationships. She will use case vignettes from her teaching, therapy, and supervisory practices to illustrate concepts.

Dr. Maureen Walker is a licensed psychologist with an independent practice in psychotherapy and multicultural consultation in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is Director of Program Development at the Jean Baker Miller Training Institute of the Stone Center at Wellesley College, as well as an Associate Director in MBA Support Services.

In addition to her clinical practice and publications, Dr. Walker has taught courses and workshops in career psychology and vocational development, developing multicultural competencies, and relational-cultural practice in organizations. Other teaching and publication projects involve exploring linkages between racial identity development and relational development, constructions of power in organizational settings, as well as the interface of faith, social justice, and relational practice.

Dr. Walker completed her graduate training in psychology at Georgia State University and the University of Texas at Austin. The author of several working papers in the Stone Center Works in Progress Series, Dr. Walker has also written several articles and textbook chapters and is co-editor of two books: How Connections Heal and The Complexity of Connection.

Julie Russell, a nurse dramatist, and Helen Emmott, a nurse ethicist, will use the art of Drama to explore important clinical ethical scenarios. Professor Michelle Boisseau is an expert in writing poems and teaching others how to write poems. Her textbook, Writing Poems is in its seventh edition and is the most widely adopted and respected text of its kind. This workshop examines the deep resources poetry offers to delight us and awaken our imaginations. We will begin by looking at some stunning poems, then we'll explore how powerful poems can launch one's own poems, then try our hand at writing our own poems and share the results. In an article written by Maxine Glaz, Can a Healer Be Too Wounded to Heal, Maxine writes: are there wounds so serious, so troubling that they confound us and tangle up our lives so that we live out the past in our ministry to others? Can these wounds make it so hard for us to reach others that we turn people off as often as we are able to reach out? When do we say that a healer may be too wounded to heal? This workshop will address the questions raised by Maxine Glaz from the perspective of the educational experience. Can a students therapeutic issues hinder the educational process? When and how do we as supervisors make that assessment? If the student completes the educational process, how do we write an evaluation that depicts our concerns? These and other questions, we will address in our workshop, When Students Therapeutic Issues Hinder the Educational Process. We invite you to join us!! Please bring your own clinical vignettes and engage with us as we explore options, strategies and resources for working with students whose wounds seem to overwhelm/hinder the educational process.
