  • The purpose of this 6-hour preconference workshop is to introduce the orofacial pain health professional to current theory, research evidence, and practice related to the application of self-regulation strategies for the management of pain, fatigue and anxiety. A foundation for self-regulation skills will first be established through didactic instruction (3 hours) and be followed by hands-on skills training (3 hours) with course presenters. The overall objective of the proposed program is to provide orofacial pain specialists with practical guidelines for providing self-regulation skills training to individuals with trigeminally-mediated pain conditions. Course topics will include: pathophysiology of trigeminal pain and stress; the fatigue-pain-anxiety model; techniques of selfregulation training for trigeminal pain management; and multidisciplinary integration of care for comprehensive patient management.
  • Learning Objectives 1. Describe the pathophysiology of common orofacial pain/TM disorders and how stress influences pain in the areas of the body associated with the trigeminal nerve.
  • 2. Develop the skills to employ physical self-regulation training (PSR) as a baseline approach to the management of orofacial pain.
