  • This course will present a sound, straightforward approach to the diagnosis and management of many masticatory pain problems. Emphasis will be placed on establishing a proper diagnosis so that correct therapy can be selected for each patient. Principles used to separate TMD from other orofacial pain disorders will be presented. The role of occlusion in TMD will be discussed in detail. Specific information will be provided for the management of the most common types of temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pains. The role of occlusal appliances will be discussed, as well as what to do next. Emphasis will be placed on the conservative management of TMD/orofacial pain.
  • Learning Objectives: 1. To identify those orofacial pain disorders that will likely respond to your therapy from those that will not. 2. How to distinguish a temporomandibular disorder from other types of orofacial pain disorders. 3. The relationship between occlusion and temporomandibular disorders. 4. The proper indications for occlusal appliance therapy. 5. When an occlusal appliance reduces the patientís symptoms, what you should do next.

  • This program will review the occasional use of opioids in chronic orofacial pain management. This will include consideration of why is it necessary for OFP practitioners to know this information even if they do not prescribe these medications. Discussion will include a review of the complexities of treating chronic pain patients with opioids, including aberrant behaviors and addiction. Recommended prescriber tools for managing chronic OFP patients with opioids will be provided. This includes safe use and storage, urine screening, informed consent and prescription monitoring systems. Issues associated with conflict management with OFP patients using opioids will be considered and the status of the FDA REMS program for extended release opioids will be updated.
  • Learning Objectives: After attending this presentation, participants should: 1. Understand that chronic pain, including complex orofacial pain, sometimes requires long-term pain management with the use of opioid medications. 2. Recognize the complexities of treating chronic pain patients with long-term use of opioid medications. 3. Identify those clinical tools that can help reduce risk factors, insure patient compliance, and improve outcomes with long-term opioid therapy. 4. Understand the most current information regarding the FDA REMS program for extended release opioids.
