  • This course is specifically for practitioners who wish to reinforce their foundation knowledge of osseous and cranial nerve structures, and the administration of local anesthesia by infiltration nerve block.
  • Part one of this course will focus on a review of the anatomical considerations for pain control; the role of the Trigeminal Nerve in sensory and motor innervation; the pharmacology of local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors; the armamentarium; maxillary and mandibular anesthesia techniques and patient management. Part two of this course will provide participants the opportunity to demonstrate competency in evaluating a patient for the delivery of local anesthesia, preparing the armamentarium, administering the inferior alveolar nerve block and managing a patient under local anesthesia.
  • Course objectives: 1. Identify the anatomical structures and relationships involved in local anesthetic injections. 2. Describe the basic pharmacology of local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors. 3. Demonstrate maxillary and mandibular local anesthesia techniques. 4. Manage all aspects of local anesthetic patient care.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to demonstrate proficiency by taking a clinical exam on a separate occasion.

  • “Why do I only get a bad batch of anesthetic in the mandible?” This presentation will discuss the reasons for the lack of effective anesthesia with emphasis on mandibular anesthetic techniques. The neuro-anatomy and histology of the pterygomandibular triangle will be reviewed to help enhance the understanding of the complexities of block anesthesia. This is essential in the development of a logical approach to needle placement. Why are we successful most of the time and proceed to miss three blocks in one week? Why, when we know that we have performed the techniques absolutely correctly, do we fail to get a grade “A” anesthesia on the patient? 30+ years of tips, tricks and mistakes will be shared.

Review the pros and cons of the conventional block, the Akinosi and Gow-Gates mandibular blocks, adding multi-task supplementation with mandibular infiltrative techniques. 2.
