Sandra S. Yamate Biography Sandra S. Yamate is the Executive Vice President, Chief Marketing and Diversity Officer for Discovery Services LLC, a minority]certified electronic discovery and document review company. She is responsible for developing and implementing the companyfs diversity protocols. Previously, Sandra was the Director of the American Bar Associationfs Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession. In that capacity she worked to develop increased opportunities for minority attorneys, monitored the progress of the legal profession in its efforts to achieve greater racial and ethnic diversity, and provided professional and career development training for diverse lawyers. Prior to that, Sandra was the Executive Director of the Chicago Committee on Minorities in Large Law Firms. There, she created and presented programming to support the career development needs of lawyers of color and to advise the Managing/Hiring Partners of Chicagofs 50 largest law firms about their diversity efforts. Prior to that, she was a litigator in private practice for ten years. Outside of the legal profession, Sandra is best known for her interest in and advocacy for authentic multicultural childrenfs literature. In 1990, recognizing the dearth of such literature and the problems and misunderstandings that this causes for Americans of Asian ancestry, she and her husband started a small business, Polychrome Publishing, to publish Asian American childrenfs books. She authored Polychromefs first two books, Char Siu Bao Boy and Ashok By Any Other Name. Polychrome books have been showcased by Teaching Tolerance Magazine (an educational publication of the Southern Poverty Law Center) as exemplary examples of multicultural childrenfs literature and they are included in the Anti]Defamation Leaguefs World of Difference Program Bibliography of Recommended Anti]Bias Childrenfs Books. Sandra is a founding member and past president of the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Chicago Area. She was the first Central Region Governor for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. She serves as President of the Harvard Law Society of Illinois and the Special Advisor to the Diversity Committee of the National Association of Women Lawyers. She is a past president of the Japanese American Service Committee, the oldest Asian American social service agency in the Midwest. She is a member of the board of the Multicultural Publishing & Education Council; a member of the Asian American Advisory Committee for the Smithsonian Institution; and a member of the Advisory Board for the Anti]Defamation Leaguefs Miller Early Childhood Initiative. She is the Co]Chair of Asian Americans for Inclusive Education and has been working with the Chicago Public Schools to incorporate Asian and Asian American Studies into the schoolsf curricula. Sandra is a former trustee and chaired the first National Summit for the Asian Pacific American Womenfs Leadership Institute; a former member of the board of the Asian American Institute; and the former Newsletter Editor/Book Reviewer for the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association. Sandra has authored a number of articles and is a frequent speaker addressing issues of race in the legal profession, multicultural childrenfs literature, and Asian American community issues. A Chicago native, Sandra earned her A.B. from the University of Illinois at Urbana]Champaign, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated magna cum laude in History and cum laude in Political Science. She received her law degree from Harvard Law School. Affiliation
